DETROIT -- Toyota Motor Corp. will expand its hybrid vehicle lineup with the subcompact Prius C hatchback that will go on sale in March.Toyota says the Prius C will get 53 mpg in the city, which it claims is the highest city fuel economy of any vehicle that is not a plug-in.As is common with hybrids, its highway fuel economy is less favorable, at 46 mpg, giving the Prius C a combined rating of 50 mpg.Based on the Yaris platform, the Prius C will be priced below $19,000 before destination charges. Reel mowers: Saving the earth while saving you money.
For many people, mowing the lawn is a total chore. To make things worse, filling your mower’s gas tank all summer can now cost more than the mower itself. How can you keep your grass, your costs and your fuel emissions low? It’s time to go back in time, all the way back to 1870. That’s when a man named Elwood McGuire of Richmond, Indiana starting selling the first commercially viable human-powered reel mower. Thanks to their low cost, zero carbon emissions and plain old vintage charm, the old-school mowers are becoming new again.

So, why the steady increase in popularity? For one, these mowers consume zero petroleum-sourced energy and have zero emissions. That’s right, zero. Think about all the gasoline consumed by traditional mowers; they are as environmentally unfriendly as they are expensive to operate. And while electric mowers are a step up from gas, they still consume electricity, the production of which contributes to air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. A reel mower only consumes your energy, which also means you’ll get a great workout.

Second, they are inexpensive. Most gasoline-powered lawnmowers start around $250 for a standard push mower and go up from there; high-quality self-propelled mulching mowers start from $400 to $600. When you combine that with the price of gas, the $65 to $100 reel mower price tag looks better and better. Even a low-cost small electric mower runs about $150 to $200, plus it adds to the cost of your monthly electric bill.

Then consider the cost of maintenance. With so many features and parts, gas and electric lawnmowers tend to break, leaving you with potentially hefty repair bills, and gas mowers need annual maintenance that includes oil changes, spark plug replacement and air filter replacement. You’ll also need to purchase a fuel stabilizer additive to keep the gas left in the tank from gunking up over the winter, as draining the tank is no longer recommended. Maintenance for a reel mower, however, is minimal. A little bit of grease and a good sharpening every year, and your costs remain low for the mower’s lifetime.

Although the reel mower wins in many categories against its mechanical counterparts, it does have some drawbacks. You’ll have a harder time if you let your grass get long, or you try to cut it when it’s wet. As Bill Turner, a recent reel mower convert from Mt. Lebanon, Pennsylvania told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, "Overall, I love it. Yes, if the grass gets too tall, it may not cut it very well, or may take several passes...but it makes mowing the yard a little more relaxing without having to hang onto a loud, vibrating power mower."

Another thing to note is that where you live dictates what type of reel mower you should buy. In the South and Southwest, grass tends to be thicker due to all the sun and heat. If you live in those areas, you’ll want to look for a heavier weight mower. If you live on the East or West Coasts or the northern half of the country, your best bet is to opt for a lighter mower. These are not steadfast rules, so assess your grass before purchase.

Reel mowers are now available at most major retailers, and with winter on its way, you can expect even better deals.

JD Powers Releases 2011 IQS Rankings

JUN. 23 - The Honda brand earned its best-ever ranking in J.D. Power and Associates' Initial Quality StudySM (IQS) for 2011, finishing second among all surveyed brands, including premium makes, the company announced today.
Honda also led the industry with seven models earning the highest initial quality ranking in their respective segments, including its top-selling Accord and Civic models. The Acura brand finished third overall in the 2011 IQS.

In the manufacturing realm, the 2011 study recognized three Honda plants for superior quality, including Honda's newest U.S. auto plant in Greensburg, Ind. Honda Manufacturing of Indiana, producing the Civic Sedan, was one of only three plants around the world to earn the Platinum Plant Quality Award. The Suzuka, Japan plant, line 1, earned a Silver Plant Quality Award, Asia Pacific (tie), for production of Civic and Insight, while the East Liberty, Ohio, plant took home a Bronze Plant Quality Award, North/South America, for production of the Accord Crosstour, CR-V and Element.

"Creating products of the highest quality and value is the foundation of our business, and it begins with a deep understanding of the customer,"
said Tetsuo Iwamura, president & CEO of American Honda. "These results are an important demonstration of our focus on the customer and the tireless efforts put forth by Honda associates throughout our organization--in R&D, in manufacturing and in sales--to exceed their high expectations of Honda and Acura."

Of the seven Honda models earning the highest initial quality score in their segment -- the most segment leaders of any brand -- five were manufactured in North America: the Civic (compact car); the Element (compact crossover SUV -- followed by the CR-V in second place); the Accord (midsize car); the Accord Crosstour (midsize crossover SUV); and the Ridgeline (midsize pickup). Those five models were joined on the 2011 segment leader list by the Insight hybrid (compact car, tie) and Honda Fit (sub-compact car).

Honda automobiles made in North America are produced using domestic and globally-sourced parts.

In a letter to manufacturing associates, Hide Iwata, Honda of America Mfg.
president and CEO and head of North American manufacturing, recognized the commitment and dedication that led to this achievement: "Your relentless commitment to improve quality and to exceed customer expectations has helped Honda achieve its best ever IQS performance. Please know that I am honored to be part of this team and I deeply appreciate your many efforts."

Now in its 25th year, IQS captures problems experienced by owners in two distinct categories--quality of design and quality of production (defects and malfunctions). The study ranks vehicles and brands based on survey reports of the number of problems for each hundred vehicles surveyed. A lower PP100 score is better, since that means fewer problems were reported by vehicle owners.

For 2011, the Honda brand showed an improvement of nine fewer PP100, from
95 to 86. Acura scored 89 PP100, compared to 86 the previous year.

Toyota Dominates Consumer Reports Reliability Survey and Recommendations

Consumer Reports announced today that it is reinstating the recommendations for eight Toyota models that were recalled in January. “We believe that Toyota has adequately addressed the problem of unintended acceleration and that its new vehicles on sale now are fundamentally safe,” the consumer organization said in a blog on its web site. The move means the Avalon, Camry, Corolla, Highlander, Matrix, RAV4, Sequoia and Tundra are all now on the Consumer Reports “recommended list”. The move coincides with the strong performance of Toyota, Scion and Lexus products on Consumer Reports Annual Car Survey.

Local Milford Student Awarded $1000 Scholarship

The Milford Chamber of Commerce presented $22,000 in scholarships to high school students recently. Acura of Milford was pleased to hear that Nyab Mir, a senior at Jonathan Law High School was the recipient of the Jon Lorensen’s Acura of Milford $1000 scholarship. We congratulate Nyab and wish him all the best in his first year of college! Awarded annually, the scholarships are funded through the Milford Chamber of Commerce Trust Fund and the BIC Golf Classic, which will take place July 12 at the Mill River Country Club.

AVON — A local mom is helping mothers across the country support children who are serving with the Marines in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Avon resident Pam Ferrigno is a member of the organization Mom 4R Marines, which was founded in 2006 by Willow Grove, Pa. resident Patty Lewis, whose son has served three tours in Iraq with the Marines. It is an all-volunteer, non-profit corporation.

Ferrigno is currently selling candy at several places in the Farmington Valley to raise funds for the group, but her involvement with the group began last year when she volunteered to knit scarves for Marines. Her work with Mom4RMarines has continued to increase ever since.

“I contacted her about the scarves and was amazed at what one woman does; I decided she deserves help,” Ferrigno said of Lewis. “Regardless of political beliefs, the troops need to know we support them.”

So far, Ferrigno is the only member from Connecticut.

Last November, she traveled to Willow Grove with daughter, Michelle, 18, and her friend to help stuff Christmas stockings to be sent to the Marines. Items placed in the stockings included non-perishable foods such as beef jerky, freeze-dried items, protein bars and candy as well as headlamps and gun cleaning kits.

“The government doesn’t provide them,” Ferrigno said. “Overall, the items that are issued to Marines are below what is given to other branches of the military.”

Mom4RMarines supports deployed troops all year long, she said, the goal being to meet basic needs and lift morale. The group does not send individual care packages but sends items to entire battalions of 1,000 or more Marines and Sailors. The most needed products at this time: small refrigerators to keep water cold; microwaves; ready to eat foods and snacks; cool neck ties; bug repellent; and baby wipes, the only means of hygiene for many.

“Many have not showered in months, and it’s over 100 degrees there,” Ferrigno said.

The organization also helps Wounded Warriors in various ways, including adapting vehicles for them, and builds memorial monuments to honor fallen Marines and Sailors. Thus far, four memorials have been built.

The needs will be doubling soon, Ferrigno said, because more troops are being deployed. The current number of 14,000 will grow to 25,000.

She started the candy sale at the beginning of March at the Home Builders Association of Hartford County’s Original Connecticut Home & Remodeling Show, where she sold up to $4,000 that has already been sent to Lewis and spent.

“People in this area are very generous,” she said. “Some gave money but didn’t take
the candy.”

“With the money donated so far from the candy sales, 4 cubic foot refrigerators and tons of ramen noodles have been sent to those most in need, plus paying for the expense of shipping,” Lewis told Ferrigno. “Thank you all in the Farmington Valley who have helped and supported the Mom4RMarines candy sales.”

As for the Operation Scarves project, the group’s mission this year is 3,000 scarves. There are three specific yarns that have been approved for making the Marine scarves, and there are separate patterns for knitting and crocheting them.

Ferrigno knits the scarves and daughter Michelle prefers to crochet them.
At Acura of Avon’s Taste of the Valley event in July, she will be displaying the scarves to draw interest. All scarves need to be mailed by Oct. 31. Letters are written to be sent with the scarves.

The new Acura ZDX divides onlookers into two camps. Stylish people are drawn to the car. Others, who prefer comfort over fashion, are less enthusiastic. The sloping roofline, in their eyes, diminishes the crossover's usefulness.

Acura is targeting people who appreciate stylish cars with the Acura ZDX, says Joe Ferreira, general manger of Acura of Avon. "It offers the utility of an SUV and the performance of a coupe," he says.

The ZDX comes in one lavishly equipped model. Its price is a bargain in the premium crossover market. Even with the most expensive "advance package," which for $10,550 contains every factory-installed option, the ZDX is still competitive when compared to, say, the BMW X6, another premium coupe-inspired crossover utility vehicle.

The 300-horsepower V-6 is smooth and refined most of the time, hardly drawing attention to itself. Press the gas pedal and the faster the motor spins, the more athletic the ZDX becomes. Our zero-to-60 run took 6.9 seconds. At about 4,500 pounds, this model is no lightweight. Yet it proved to be responsive and surprisingly nimble.

Part of the advance package includes a suspension setting with "comfort" and "sport" driver options. As you would expect, sport stiffens the ride and sharpens the handling, but not by all that much. Comfort was perfectly acceptable when tackling a closed course slalom. The ride in either position is firm but absorbent enough to soften the harshest potholes.

The front seat occupants get the royal treatment. There are eight-way power-adjustable seats plus two-way lumbar support for the driver. The back seat, on the other hand, is best reserved for children. Legroom is an issue, but so is headroom. There's a sharp corner at the top and back of the rear door that struck me as having some injury potential if the door is opened carelessly. And the styling takes its toll on rear visibility. Fortunately, the advance package includes an effective blind spot warning system and a multi-view backup camera.

Cargo space is limited. A new toaster oven, still in its box, took up about one-third of the space. So much for utility. Cargo space did expand markedly once the split and folding rear seats are lowered. There are also two side compartments and a shallow under-floor compartment for concealed storage.

"It was designed for two people to grab a couple of suitcases, fold the rear seats and go," Ferreira says.

OK - so it's not all that practical. However, the ZDX is finished to spectacularly high standards. Materials, design and assembly were all first rate. Everything had the feeling of quality - even the center console armrest. Ditto for the covers for the cup holder and 12-volt power port. You'll want to open and close these items just for the fun of it. During the review period when we drove the car, many onlookers were drawn to the ZDX's styling. They weren't worried about the compromises the styling imposes. And so we declare the ZDX a success. "Buyers who are Acura diehards say it's the nicest Acura yet," Ferreira says.

Paula says...

This car is not as intimidating as it looks. It drives beautifully and feels exceptionally solid. In fact, this feeling of solidness is equaled by few cars and surpassed by none that I can recall. Still, the overwhelming thought that I had every time I drove or rode in the ZDX was that this is a small large car. The front seats were lavishly comfortable, and at five-feet even, I fit in the back seat, too. But Jim, who is much taller, definitely would not be happy there, even for a short ride. The cargo area is finished beautifully, but loading groceries would take a little more of a lift than some people might like.

The view is difficult in several directions. There's no problem ahead, but everyone will find difficult the view to the rear and the three-quarters view over the right shoulder. Fortunately, the blind spot warning and backup camera worked superbly. Also on my complaint list, the central area of the instrument panel had too many small and closely packed buttons for my taste.

As for fuel economy, we averaged 19.8 mpg on premium.

Toyota Unveils Compact Hybrid Concept

Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc., (TMS) unveiled the FT-CH dedicated hybrid concept at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit. The FT-CH is a concept that addresses Toyota's stated strategy to offer a wider variety of conventional hybrid choices to its customers as it begins to introduce plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHVs) and battery electric vehicles (BEVs) in model year 2012, and hydrogen fuel cell hybrid vehicles (FCHVs) to global markets in 2015.

"Within the next 10 to 20 years, we will not only reach peak oil, we will enter a period where demand for all liquid fuels will exceed supply," said Jim Lentz, TMS president. 5 Reasons to Buy a Toyota

It's hard to think of another company that nose-dived as fast as Toyota has. A few months ago, millions of drivers considered Toyota the gold standard for automobiles, with quality and reliability you could practically take for granted. Then came mysterious gas-pedal problems, claims of deadly "sudden acceleration" incidents, the global recall of more than 8 million vehicles, and vacillating assurances from shell-shocked executives. The recalls could end up costing $2 billion or more. Toyota's sales have plunged, and its U.S. market share has fallen from 17 percent to 13 percent in just two months. The collapse rivals Enron or Lehman Brothers.
What's different about Toyota, though, is that it will recover. The automaker has deep pockets and tons of talent. Diffident CEO Akio Toyoda may not be the right man to lead Toyota through the worst crisis in its history, but sooner or later the company will regain control and get back on the pavement. It may even end up a better company than before. Meanwhile, Toyota automobiles could be a smart buy, with dealers forced to offer discounts and other incentives to move merchandise sullied by the scandal. Shoppers should research prices at sites like Edmunds.com or kbb.com to make sure that the price paid today is commensurate with the likely resale value down the road. If the price seems right, there are several other good reasons to buy a Toyota:
Safety concerns are exaggerated. The problems are serious, but political posturing in Washington and media hype have created the impression that every Toyota is dangerous. That's ridiculous. The sudden-acceleration incidents at the center of the controversy have been "linked" to 34 deaths over the past decade or so. Toyota has sold more than 20 million vehicles in the United States during that time. By those numbers, rough math suggests the odds of a sudden-acceleration fatality in a Toyota vehicle are on the order of 1 in 600,000--not exactly a death wish for somebody buying a Toyota. And those odds could end up much lower. Deaths now considered linked to sudden acceleration could later be proved to have been caused by something else--including drivers who were pressing the gas pedal instead of the brake. No driver wants to admit doing that, but the fact is, it happens.
None of that is meant to disparage people who have been killed or hurt in a Toyota, and recent revelations depict a company that seemed unsympathetic to genuine complaints from customers. But the acceleration problem could turn out to be far less widespread than current hysteria suggests. It's worth recalling that the Audi sudden-acceleration incidents in the 1980s--at first thought to be related to vehicle flaws--were later proved to be entirely the fault of drivers. Meanwhile, by virtue of its woes, Toyota is probably paying more attention to safety right now than any other automaker, to include the extraordinary step of shutting down factories to retool the gas-pedal assembly in many popular models. Toyotas coming off the assembly line these days are probably subject to more quality control than most other cars on the market.
Recalls aren't the whole story. Being forced to recall millions of vehicles is a big deal, but Toyota still seems to perform better than other automakers when it comes to the kinds of complaints that lead to recalls. Data analyzed by Edmunds.com, for example, show that there have been many more complaints lodged against Toyota for sudden acceleration since 2005 than for any other automaker. But overall, Toyota has drawn far fewer complaints than most competitors, which is consistent with its once sterling reputation. Edmunds found that over the past 10 years, Toyota accounted for just 9.1 percent of all complaints filed with the government, even though it racked up 13.5 percent of all car sales. So despite the acceleration issue, Toyota still performs better than most in terms of complaints.
Toyota's not alone. Internal documents showing that Toyota boasted of saving $100 million by avoiding a series of recalls make the Japanese automaker seem singularly sinister. But all automakers try to avoid recalls. Toyota just happens to be the one that got caught boasting about it, since it's the company under investigation right now--and subject to subpoena. And all carmakers know that the Obama administration is "not industry friendly," as another embarrassing Toyota document put it. Obama, like Bush, is requiring steep improvement in fuel economy, which will force all automakers to invest heavily in new engine technologies. That arguably hurts the Detroit automakers most, since their fleets get the worst gas mileage and they have the farthest to go. And anybody who still has doubts should ask Rick Wagoner or Fritz Henderson if the Obama administration is industry friendly; they were both forced to resign as CEO of General Motors, in the midst of the company's bankruptcy and federal bailout.
The cars are still good. Of 18 Toyota vehicles, seven rank in the top three in their category in the U.S. News Best Car and Truck rankings, including the Avalon sedan, Sienna minivan, Sequoia SUV, and Venza crossover. Five of 12 Lexus vehicles rank in the top three. In its latest quality ratings, J. D. Power & Associates ranks Lexus first and Toyota seventh, out of 37 automotive brands. Consumer Reports named the Toyota Prius one of its 10 "Best Picks" for 2010, despite a recall involving brakes. And CR is poised to restore its coveted "recommended" status to eight vehicles it suspended from its ranking in the midst of the mushrooming recall controversy: the Avalon, Camry, Corolla, Highlander, Matrix, RAV4, Sequoia, and Tundra. Toyota's overall quality has slipped from the stratospheric highs of a few years ago, but there are still few automakers that can match its record across their entire fleet.
White-glove treatment. To win back customers and alleviate safety concerns, Toyota will pick up and return some recalled cars, so worried owners don't have to drive to the dealership. Toyota is also offering rental cars or rides to work to some owners getting their cars fixed. And CEO Toyoda has said that the company must start paying more attention to customers. Toyota certainly has room to rise: It ranks 17th out of 23 on J. D. Power's customer-service index. If Toyota is serious about rebuilding its business, it has to start by wooing skeptical consumers. That's a boon for buyers.

Car Care: The Truth About Do-It-Yourself Oil Changes

Friends don’t let friends change their own oil.

The oil change used to be the classic do-it-yourself Saturday activity to save a few bucks on auto maintenance. There are many reasons, however, why this seemingly “easy” procedure is best left to pros.

If you’re an experienced do-it-yourselfer with a convenient garage setup and time on your hands, you might save a few dollars changing your vehicle’s oil. For most car owners, changing their own oil can be a very messy lesson in false economy – not to mention possible environmental consequences. Many a would-be DIY-er has been left splashed in the face with hot, dirty motor oil, experienced burned or bruised fingers and even a damaged engine.

The seemingly simple oil change can have very expensive consequences if done incorrectly. If that sounds like exaggeration, ask yourself, Do you change the filter before or after the oil? What kind of oil does your vehicle require? What viscosity index? What performance rating?

Your owner’s manual will provide this information, and, of course, your dealer service tech knows, too. Most newer vehicles require less frequent oil changes than their older counterparts, the result of improved engines and improved lubricants. The actual change interval can depend on your driving conditions and driving style, and many vehicles even have engine oil life monitors that alert you when to change the oil.

Maybe you remember your father or an uncle changing oil and using “10W-40.” Did you know that putting that grade into some newer models could lead to damage down the road? How would you know? There’s a lot of information right on the top of a can or carton of oil in the API (American Petroleum Institute) symbol – or what’s called “the donut.” It’s a circle with various letters and numbers that tell you if the oil is right for your vehicle.

Look first for the “SAE” mark (Society of Automotive Engineers). Then look to the middle of the donut for the viscosity (thickness) information, which relates to oil flow at different temperatures. Let’s use, for example, the common 5W-30 grade, which, like all passenger car motor oils, is a “multi-grade.” The “5W” is the winter viscosity rating – the lower the number here, the thinner the oil at low temperature and the happier your engine will be in cold weather when it's time to turn over. The number to the right relates to higher temperatures, which indicates thicker viscosity for better performance in summer heat.

Now, see the two letters at the top of the donut? The first signifies engine type. If you have a gasoline engine, you need oil with an “S.” A “C” means it’s for diesel engines. The second letter represents the performance rating. For the most protection from power-robbing deposits, pay close attention to that second letter. “SM” is the best rating for gasoline engines right now; “CJ-4” is the best for diesel. These ratings change as oils are improved.

That performance rating is very important! Your new car might require SM-rated oil, so using some older “SJ” that your brother-in-law found for a bargain price might not give your engine the best protection possible. Using newer, higher-performance rated oil in older cars, however, is fine.

Finally, at the bottom of the donut, look for the “Energy Conserving” label. That means the oil has been formulated to help save gas through reduced engine friction.

Now, you can impress friends with your newfound knowledge about motor oil. Here’s another number that may impress them: The used oil from one oil change, if disposed of improperly, can contaminate one million gallons of drinking water. That’s a year’s supply for 50 people. So tell them that if they do choose to change their own oil, take the used motor oil to a recycling center. Used motor oil is routinely recycled into new lubricating oil.

Unfortunately, some DIY-ers still dump their motor oil on the ground or down storm drains or put it in bottles and dump it in the garbage. Used motor oil is insoluble, lasting and can contain toxic chemicals and heavy metals. It’s slow to degrade, and it sticks to everything from beach sand to bird feathers.

It turns out oil changes aren’t so simple.

Close Encounters of the Fifth Door

The most popular sedan in the U.S. now has a five-seat crossover version for buyers to choose.
The concept of a crossover is often open to interpretation, leaving carmakers scrambling to determine whether to make their new introductions look like bold SUVs or stretched sedans. Honda and Toyota, builders of the top-selling Accord and Camry sedans, have this time chosen opposite paths.

Honda’s new 2010 Accord Crosstour is a restyled version of the company’s top-selling Accord sedan, a perennial best seller, which was redesigned in 2008 and moved from being a midsize car to full-size. Toyota’s new-for-2009 Venza is proportioned halfway between its Camry sedan and its spacious Highlander, which is a sport utility vehicle built on a car platform.

The Honda is more sedan-like, and the Toyota is more SUV-like. The Honda is slightly larger at just about 195 inches long, compared to the Venza’s Camry-like 189 inches in length. Both weigh just about 4,000 pounds each.

The standard powerplant for the Crosstour will be Honda’s 3.5-iter i-VTEC V6 engine generating 268 hp. Venza’s standard mill is a 182-hp 2.7-liter four-cylinder. Honda’s drivetrain delivers more hp. An additional advantage is its cylinder shut-off system, called Variable Cylinder Management, which allows the engine to run on either three or four cylinders instead of six, and that reduces fuel consumption during low-load conditions.

The Accord sedan is newly spacious inside, and therefore the Crosstour benefits from its larger dimensions. For example, the front seats are spaced farther apart than the previous Accord’s. Where the Crosstour deviates most from the Accord is in the space added behind the rear seats. The Crosstour gets a unique storage “trunk” hidden under the normal cargo floor. Inside this trunk space, under a cover, is an eight-inch deep cargo box, called the Hidden Removable Utility Box that can be lifted out of the car. When the four-cubic-foot box is dropped in its place, the cover folds down and more cargo can be placed on top. Compared to the Accord sedan, the Crosstour rides higher on its suspension and is available with the added assurance of four-wheel drive for slippery roads.

By comparison, the Venza does not have as large an underfloor storage area. The Venza does have an avant garde style instrument panel with the gear selector protruding from the center of the instrument panel instead of the conventional location on the center console, like in the Camry.

The Accord Crosstour is available in EX, EX-L (additional luxury equipment) and EX-Ls (four-wheel drive) models, and all are equipped with a five-speed automatic transmission. Underway, this gearbox is smooth and sure when it shifts. The Accord Crosstour is a bit easier to maneuver in a parking lot with a turning circle of 36 feet compared to the Venza’s 39 feet.

Honda has always done well designing vehicles that maximize interior space and the Crosstour will carry on that tradition.

Overall, the Accord Crosstour rides smoothly on a variety of smooth and rough roads with the standard power of the V6 at the ready. With optional four-wheel drive, you’ll also have plenty of traction.

The biggest style difference puts the conventional SUV crossover styling of the 2010 Toyota Venza versus the slanted hatchback, forward-looking style of the new 2010 Honda Accord Crosstour.

Revive the Classics
The biggest fuel savings comes not from hybrid technology but from the old standards: car pooling and public transportation. If you and just one friend or neighbor trade off commuting to and from work, you cut your fuel usage by about 50 percent. No other step will save you as much money. Also, if you have two vehicles in the family motor pool, leave the thirstier one in the garage as often as possible.

Public transportation saves fuel, and possibly money. It also decreases congestion, which saves everyone fuel. Help yourself and everyone else; be part of the solution.

Get the Lead Out
Weight is fuel economy's natural enemy, so removing unnecessary items — or people — from your car can translate to real fuel savings.

Get the Leadfoot Out
You can save fuel immediately in whatever you drive by going easy on the accelerator. Jack rabbit starts and full-throttle acceleration boost fuel consumption dramatically. It's all a matter of degree: Light acceleration saves more than moderate acceleration.

Top speed also plays a part. Most vehicles are most efficient when cruising in their top gear at a relatively low speed. For example, a car with a five-speed transmission would be most efficient in 5th gear at 40 to 55 mph. Wind resistance increases exponentially with speed, so as your pace increases from this point, fuel economy drops dramatically. Onboard trip computers that show instantaneous and average fuel economy are remarkably accurate. Keep an eye on this and you'll learn how to drive in a miserly fashion.

An Ounce of Prevention
Keeping your tires inflated properly and your engine running right is critical to efficient motoring. Underinflated tires can lower your fuel economy by full miles per gallon. (Get the proper inflation pressure from the sticker on your car's doorjamb or the owner's manual, and not the tire's sidewall.) Even if your car seems to be running well, that perplexing Check Engine light could represent a dead oxygen sensor or some other emissions control problem that causes the vehicle to waste several miles per gallon.

Open Windows or Air Conditioning?
This is an age-old conundrum. (Unlike a car's heater, which uses free engine heat to warm the cabin, the air conditioner robs engine power and lowers fuel economy.) So which approach is better? Sorry, but it's not as simple as one or the other.

If your car has been sitting in the sun and is hotter than the outside air, drive for a few minutes with the windows open to cool it off. Then, if you're hitting the highway, close 'em up and turn on the A/C. Aerodynamics are more important at high speeds, so if you're not exceeding 35 or 40 mph, open windows won't make as much difference. It also depends on the vehicle. The detriment from driving with the windows down is greater, say, in a Chevy Corvette, which has excellent aerodynamics, than in a Hummer, which has ... none. The same applies to convertibles; you'll burn less fuel with the top up.

Keep It Sleek
Speaking of aerodynamics, roof-top carriers and bike and ski racks don't do you any favors — even when they're empty. If you keep all your cargo inside the car, you'll slip through the wind better. Also, strip off any aftermarket add-ons such as bug deflectors and window and sunroof wind deflectors. By design, these items work by wrecking your aerodynamics. Sure, bug entrails on your windshield are gross, but they aren't known to cost you any fuel.

Premium or Regular?
Lower octane costs less, but should you use it? Most modern cars that call for premium fuel can run on regular gasoline without knocking or any long-term penalty. Technically, this makes the car less efficient, but not to a degree that negates the cost savings from the cheaper fuel grade. NOTE: This is true of cars for which premium is recommended, not required. If in doubt, look for terms such as "for best performance" and "recommended" as opposed to "only" or "required." If your car has a turbocharger or supercharger, you probably should stick with premium fuel. Of course, if your car calls for regular gasoline, there's no reason to run it on anything higher in octane.

The bold and aggressive styling of the all-new 2009 Acura TL is a declaration of independence for this brand. The new look at Acura is bold and different. No more “middle-of-the-road” design for this carmaker. The new TL is creative and distinctive. The new design offers more room, more power and new technologies that make driving safer and more enjoyable. The “SH-AWD” model features the latest edition of Acura’s much admired Super Handling All-Wheel Drive system. The cabin features iPod and Bluetooth connectivity, and the available navigation system with real-time traffic reports and weather forecasts would be welcome in an AWACs command aircraft. The climate control system is adaptive, and the optional surround sound system provides awesome sonics. Given the Acura TL’s $34,995 MSRP (not including taxes, license or a $760 destination and handling charge), the TL is a bargain in the midsize luxury sedan class.
The 2009 Acura TL is available in base and up-level SH-AWD trim levels. The base TL comes equipped with 17-inch alloy wheels, xenon headlights, a sunroof, heated side mirrors, dual-zone automatic climate control, rear ventilation controls, eight-way power front seats with heating and driver memory functions, a tilt-telescoping steering column, leather upholstery and Bluetooth phone connectivity. Also standard is an eight-speaker stereo with in-dash six-CD changer, satellite radio, Bluetooth audio connectivity, auxiliary audio jack, USB port and dedicated iPod interface.
The TL SH-AWD adds all-wheel drive, a more powerful engine, 18-inch alloy wheels, upgraded brakes, more aggressively bolstered front seats, upgraded metallic trim and upgraded leather upholstery with contrasting stitching.
The Technology Package, available on both trims, adds a hard drive-based navigation system with voice recognition, real-time traffic, real-time weather forecasts, GPS-linked and solar-sensing adaptive climate control system, keyless ignition/entry, a rear spoiler, rearview camera and a 10-speaker Acura/ELS Surround® Sound system with DVD audio and 12.7 GB of digital music storage. All TLs can be equipped with more aggressive tires while the SH-AWD can be equipped with 19-inch wheels.
The base model 2009 Acura TL is front-wheel drive and is powered by a 3.5-liter V6 that produces 280 hp and 254 lb/ft of torque. The all-wheel drive 2009 TL SH-AWD gets a 3.7-liter V6 that makes 305 hp and 273 lb/ft of torque. The all-wheel drive system is capable of transferring different levels of power to individual wheels to maximize traction and grip through turns and in inclement weather. Both TL models come standard with a five-speed automatic that includes steering wheel-mounted paddleshifters. Fuel economy for the 3.5-liter TL is 18 mpg city and 26 mpg highway, while the SH-AWD achieves mileage of 17 mpg city and 25 mpg highway.
All 2009 Acura TL models come with antilock disc brakes with brake assist, stability and traction control, front-seat side airbags, full-length side-curtain airbags and active front restraints. Like all Acura models, the TL is considered a Top Safety Pick by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. The TL received top crash safety scores in all tests. Acura is the first carmaker to have every model ace the IIHS crash safety tests.
As its many fans would expect, the 2009 Acura TL features a thoroughly high-tech cabin design. The center stack presents the controls in a waterfall design angled toward the driver. The steering wheel is equipped with redundant controls for audio, cruise control, the trip computer and Bluetooth hands-free phone capabilities. Get the Technology Package and your TL will respond to voice commands, adjusting most cabin controls accordingly. Music fans will appreciate the standard iPod interface, one of the best available.
Interior quality and craftsmanship are topnotch. Rather than swath the interior surfaces with faux glam trim, Acura has installed a no-nonsense look that is quite handsome. In particular, the SH-AWD model's available two-tone color scheme, higher-quality alloy trim and contrasting stitching is stylish without being gauche.
The new TL is roomy and comfortable. This is a driver’s car and the control seat reflects that with great support. Wait until you hear the surround-sound system! You won’t be listening to your home stereo the same way again. This system is that good. The rear seat is spacious and offers enough headroom for tall passengers. Here’s a “why-doesn’t-every-car-have-them” design detail: The large flip-up headrests provide protection for occupants while clearing rear vision when nobody's back there. The trunk holds 13.1 cubic feet of luggage and offers a “poke-through” tunnel to the cabin for long items.
The two 2009 Acura TL models are so different – different engines, different drive wheels, different wheel sizes and different electronic steering calibrations – so they drive very differently as well. The base TL has the mileage and comfort ride commuters look for. The TL SH-AWD lives up to the "Super Handling" part of its drive system. With the capability to apply more power to the outside wheels during cornering, the TL claws its way around with total confidence. The SH-AWD TL's electric steering has good weighting and feedback to supplement its good handling. With 305 hp and SH-AWD, this TL makes the most of its power, too. Launches are rocket-like and passes are kick-down solid.

For most people the thought of working disciplined long hours while maintaining a positive attitude and not to mention dealing with the New England weather conditions!- might not be one of the first picks for a career choice- But not for Deb Novack!

It’s been over 16 years and Deb admits that she truly loves her job!

She adds, “The best part of my job is staying in touch with my customers. It’s about making long-term relationships that span a lifetime, sometimes generations!”

It’s this type of philosophy that keeps her smiling and maintains her cheerful outlook.

Deb would like to share a very simple recipe that will definitely make you and yours smile too! – (it’s got chocolate in it!)

Deb’s Dish- Chocolate Cake

1 Pkg. Chocolate Cake Mix 1 Pkg. Instant Chocolate Pudding
1 Cup Sour Cream ½ Cup Oil (Canola)
4 Eggs ½ Cup Warm Water
6 Oz. Chocolate Chips ½ Cup Shredded Coconut
Mix all ingredients together- Can Cook in Bundt Pan or 13x9 Pan at 350 degrees for 1 hr.
